After a successful – and critically acclaimed – run in 2019, the Bridge Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is back to charm audiences with a limited run this summer.
The show has an unusual plot: one which binds love, magic, and mischief in an Athenian forest. Four young lovers, feuding fairies, and a group of amateur actors all fall under the spell of the mischievous Puck (David Moorst), leading to a night of confusion and enchantment. By dawn, order is restored, love is realigned, and the play ends in celebration.

The production, in true Bridge Theatre fashion, is an immersive spectacle staged in the round, offering audiences a choice between seated viewing around the pit or a fully immersive standing experience. While this setup is somewhat unorthodox for a Shakespeare production, one could argue that this modern upgrade from traditional Globe staging is precisely what the show needs to captivate contemporary audiences.
In all, this Midsummer Night’s Dream strikes a near-perfect balance between Shakespearean tradition and modern theatrical innovation. Through its immersive staging, inventive design, and exceptional performances, the Bridge Theatre has once again proven that the Bard’s work can be as enchanting and relevant today as it was over 400 years ago.
