Heathers - The Arts at Marble Arch

Dear diary: Heathers is back in town. 

The musical written by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy is based on the 1989 film of the same name. Veronica Sawyer is a nobody, until she finds a way into the world of the Heathers - the most popular girls in school. When she meets, and falls in love with, Jason “JD” Dean, things quickly get out of hand.

Heathers the Musical has, over the years, become one of those musicals that everyone knows. Its fans are devoted, and have kept this production alive for almost a decade. 

I must be honest, at first I didn’t understand the hype. But when I reluctantly saw it back in 2023 at The Other Palace, I was hooked. No - more than that - I was obsessed. Every song is a hit, every line solicits either outbursts of laughter or heartfelt internal reflection. And this 2026 revamp is no different. I spent most of the show crying, honestly, that’s how powerful Heathers and its soundtrack are. 

This is my fifth trip to Westerberg, so it will come as no surprise that I have had my fair share of cast switches. But this combination may be my favourite yet. 

Gerardine Sacdalan as Veronica is stunning, the perfect mix of naïveté and sheer vocal power. Liberty Stottor as Heather Chandler (the Mythic B*tch) left me absolutely breathless. Hilarious and yet surprisingly touching, I loved every minute of her performance. Louis Hearsey as JD is just terrifyingly charismatic. Markus Södergren and Beau Jackson as Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney (respectively) are pure unadulterated chaos together.

But Heathers has always had a reputation for introducing new talent to the theatre scene. In fact, I used to call this show a “Halfway House” between drama school and the West End. This production, I’m happy to report, has kept this tradition alive. 

Dear World, there’s a new star rising and her name is Sophie Manners. Having traded in one school for Westerberg - Manners effortlessly steals the show with her Martha Dunstock. Her voice is absolute bliss to listen to, she truly is a gift to the world of musical theatre. The most heartfelt welcome to you, Sophie. 

This production is stronger than ever. Having received the odd touch-up and additional set pieces, this is the Heathers we all know and love. It’s a beautiful freaking day every time it announces a return, this is the cult-classic musical we all need.
