Beginning its fifth year on the West End, Back to the Future: The Musical continues to thrill audiences with high stakes technical stunts, impressive choreography and unwavering energy. Having seen the show twice before, this reviewer did not expect to see so many subtle changes in characterisation. The introduction of Brian Conley as Doc Brown and Maddie Grace Jepson as Lorraine Baines imbued the performance with a renewed vitality, offering a genuinely refreshing interpretation of the beloved characters.
Back to the Future: The Musical is adapted from the cult-classic ’80s film of the same name. It follows teenager Marty McFly, who accidentally travels 30 years into the past and sets off a chain of events that could alter his future forever. The show features fan-favourite hits from the movie, including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode,” alongside fresh numbers like “Gotta Start Somewhere,” “Pretty Baby,” and “It’s Only a Matter of Time.” The combination of nostalgia, energetic performances, and inventive stage effects makes it a fun ride for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

The danger with a film to stage adaptation is simple, disappointing fans of the beloved movie. However, Back to the Future is the perfect demonstration of what an adaptation can be: close enough to the original to satisfy old fans, but far enough that it stands as a production of its own. That being said, this production would not be nearly as thrilling as it is if it wasn't for the main attraction - the DeLorean. Without giving too much away, this set piece may just be the one which sticks in your mind for years to come.
The soundtrack itself is fairly uneven, with some brilliant numbers and a few which are, while enjoyable in the moment, ultimately quite forgettable in the grand scheme of things. This inconsistency occasionally disrupts the show’s momentum, but the stronger pieces are memorable enough to carry the production forward. The book, on the other hand, is full of hilarious jokes and heartfelt moments, creating an authentic extension to the beloved classic film. It is not perfect by any means, but it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening with characters we have loved for decades.

Standout performances were, without a doubt, delivered by C.J. Borger (Goldie Wilson), Jepson, Caden Brauch (Marty McFly) and Orlando Gibbs (George McFly) in their respective roles. Each of the three displayed a strong command of comedic timing in their delivery, drawing continuous laughter from the audience all evening. Few productions manage to keep the laughter flowing so consistently, making this one stand out as a true crowd-pleaser. Their energy and precision elevated the production, ensuring these performances remained some of the most memorable highlights of the night. They made the characters their own, a real testament to the beauty that is live theatre. Their unique interpretations brought freshness and authenticity, reminding the audience why live performance feels so immediate and special.
All in all, Back to the Future the Musical remains a dazzling spectacle that balances nostalgia with originality. While not every number makes its mark, the combination of sharp performances, inventive staging, and sheer theatrical magic makes it an unmissable event. For long-time fans and first-time visitors alike, this production proves that the past—and the future—can be just as thrilling on stage as they ever were on screen.
