Jane Austen's famous 1815 comedic novel 'Emma' is back for a new stage adaptation, and it is wittier and funnier than ever, delighting audiences with its clever dialogue and sharp social commentary. The story revolves around the titular character, Emma Woodhouse, a young woman of considerable wealth and intelligence, who takes it upon herself to play matchmaker among her friends and acquaintances. Her well-meaning but often misguided attempts to orchestrate romantic relationships lead to a series of humorous misunderstandings and social entanglements.

The casting for this production is impeccable, featuring India Shaw-Smith, William Chubb, Ed Sayer, and many more. Shaw-Smith, in the titular role, is simply exquisite—sharp, witty, and brimming with integrity and grace as she brings the character to life.

Opposite her, William Chubb delivers a memorable turn as the family patriarch, Mr. Woodhouse. Far from a stereotypical figure of high society, Mr. Woodhouse is a man who genuinely tries to understand his daughter, protect her from harm, and keep pace with her boundless energy—all while comically weary from the effort. These dynamics produced moments of brilliant humour, where even the smallest glance could send the audience into uproarious laughter. Sayer’s Mr. Knightley was the perfect voice of reason—calm, cool, and collected, grounding the play against Emma’s impulsiveness. His thoughtful reproaches revealed Emma’s flaws with warmth and authority, capturing Knightley’s role as both her moral compass and source of aggravation. Altogether, the performances elevated the production into something truly delightful and unforgettable.

The script, adapted from the original novel by Ryan Craig, is fast-paced comedic genius. From witty one-liners to heartfelt monologues, this show delivers on the promise of Austen's legacy. Putting on a production of such a classic is a challenge for multiple reasons. The first is having to keep the integrity of the original piece within the adaptation. The second is making it appeal to a modern day audience. I can say with certainty that Craig's adaptation delivered on both of these counts. making 'Emma' a play this reviewer and audience will not forget in a hurry.

The set is placed on a raked stage, with polished wooden floorboards and lavish furniture. The entire scene looks as though it has been lifted straight from a drawing-room painting. The aesthetic is completed by elegant costumes that echo the fashions of Austen’s novels. With their understated colours and delicate fabrics, they transport the audience into the world of 19th-century English high society.

This production of Emma is a perfect classic adaptation—captivating from start to finish, it balances wit, charm, and authenticity in a way that both honours Austen’s legacy and enchants a modern audience.
