Based on the chart-topping hits of the multi-million-selling pop phenomenon Steps, Here & Now follows four friends and co-workers who make a pact to have the perfect “summer of love.” Naturally, things don’t go quite as planned. Set in a brightly lit supermarket, Better Best Bargains, the production makes clever use of its setting to create a vibrant, high-energy backdrop for the story.
Despite its dynamic choreography and enthusiastic performances, the musical ultimately leaves much to be desired in terms of narrative depth. The opening scenes promise a strong foundation for character development, but the constant barrage of plot twists—one seemingly every few minutes—renders many of them redundant. While it’s not unusual for jukebox musicals to feature lighter storylines, the lack of cohesion here occasionally distracts from the overall experience. That said, for many audience members, the music is the main draw, and Here & Now certainly delivers on that front.

As with many jukebox productions centred on a single pop group, Here & Now clearly caters to a niche audience—those familiar with and fond of Steps’ discography. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite transcend that boundary. As someone who had never encountered Steps’ music before attending the show (save for one recognisable hit), I found it difficult to connect with the material. However, I appeared to be in the minority; much of the audience sang and clapped along enthusiastically, clearly revelling in the nostalgia and feel-good atmosphere that the show cultivates so well.
All that being said, what truly redeems Here & Now are the performances, which are delivered with remarkable energy and commitment. Rebecca Lock, in the leading role of Caz, is simply outstanding—a true vocal powerhouse whose stage presence commands attention from the moment she appears. Her performance balances humour, warmth, and vulnerability, grounding the show even when the plot threatens to lose its focus. The supporting cast also deserves recognition for their vocal precision and infectious enthusiasm, breathing life into every number and ensuring the audience remains engaged throughout.

While these stellar performances elevate the production significantly, they aren’t quite enough to compensate for the weaknesses in the script and structure. One can’t help but wish that the quality of the storytelling matched the talent of the performers. Still, the cast’s passion and vocal prowess provide a strong reminder of the power of live theatre—even when the material doesn’t quite rise to meet it.
In the end, Here & Now shines in moments but struggles to hold its own beyond the nostalgia. Despite a talented cast and some strong vocal performances, the weak storyline and uneven pacing make it difficult to fully invest in. Fans of Steps will no doubt enjoy revisiting their favourite hits, but for others, the show falls short of delivering a truly satisfying theatrical experience.
